The 9th General Conference of the Lotha Eloe Hoho got underway on April 28 at Tiyi Hall, Wokha Town, on the theme “Women of Vision, Shaping the Future.” The two-day event would conclude on April 29.
Deputy Chief Minister for Home and Border Affairs, Yanthungo Patton, attended the opening session as special guest. In his address, he expressed appreciation for the large turnout and the unity among women, stating that such gatherings reflect strength within the community. He encouraged the organisation to hold similar programmes beyond Wokha and assured his support. Patton called for greater involvement of women in decision-making and public life.
Referring to social concerns, he spoke on the need to address drug abuse and HIV/AIDS through collective effort and strict action. He also commended the Lotha Youth Hoho for its stand on a drug-free Wokha.
He further raised concern over declining interest in agriculture and urged the younger generation to return to farming with dedication. He announced that members of the Eloe Hoho would be sponsored for a visit to Mizoram to learn from community-based development practices. On the issue of illegal immigration, he urged citizens, especially landlords, to remain alert.
Dr N Janbemo Humtsoe, educator and Vice President of the Lotha Academy, speaking on the theme, said that women today are doing well in different fields including business, education and leadership. He pointed out that many shops in Wokha are run by women and described it as a positive change.
He also highlighted recent academic success in the Lotha subject as a proud achievement. He stated that women have an important role in the home, where children first learn about language and values. Through daily life and interaction, children can develop a better understanding of their culture and identity, including the Lotha language, he added. He also referred to the contributions of the Naga Mothers’ Association since its formation in 1984 in promoting peace.
