Nagaland State Election 2023: Cash, contraband seizure already at 50% of 2018 election in 2 weeks

Various central and state enforcement agencies mandated to curb the use of money power and other forms of inducements during the election have already seized 50% of the previous election figures. This was informed to Nagaland Tribune by Nagaland Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) V Shashank Shekhar.

“We have been informed by the agencies that in this election, our seizures are already 50% of the previous election, though it has only been a few days since the announcement of polls,” stated the CEO.

As on 31 January, various central and state enforcement agencies have seized cash amounting to Rs 35.69 lakh; 34716.589 litres of liquor worth Rs 2.24 crore; 2.31 kg of drugs/narcotics worth Rs 1.98 crore and 3080 kg of Areca nuts worth Rs 1.19 crore.

Following the announcement of the dates of the General Election to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly Election 2023 by the Election Commission of India on 18 January, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) had come into force in the state.

Speaking about poll preparedness, he informed that the state is fully prepared for the election and exuded confidence for a free and fair election.

“We are very confident of a free and fair election and for this, the enforcement agencies are also actively involved including the central and state forces. The state police, excise, and the central forces are also in contact with the enforcement directorate,” Shekhar stated.

“When everyone come together, we can ensure that this will be a free and fair election”, he added.

The CEO also appreciated the efforts of the churches, villages and tribal councils, and various stakeholders for their contributions in ensuring a free and fair election.
