Concerned over poor waste management along Kiphire’s popular walking path in the foothills of Singrip village, a group of local youths has started an initiative to install waste bins. The trek has recently become a sensation for Kiphirians who wish to see the golden sunrise from the highest point of the district in Nagaland.
The young enthusiasts launched the project with zero budget but was supported by other like-minded citizens who shared similar concerns for the need to keep the foothills clean.

Speaking to Nagaland Tribune one of the members of ‘Yangshilong’ said, “Many felt the need to see their nature clean but it starts with a commitment that brings the vision to light. I’m so blessed to see our small dream come to light.” “We have not waited on someone to bring about the solution, we thought it should start from us,” he added.
Another member said, “Although many love hiking over the foothills, many of us fail to also give love or care to the place which gives us a refreshing and wonderful experience of being alive and healthy, this small initiative is something everyone is bounded to give back to nature what we owe. It’s a moral responsibility.”
The foothills wastebin initiative got positive response from Singrip Village Students’ Union who appreciated the efforts of the team and volunteered themselves in implementation of the dustbin in the foothills today.
The group composed its named ‘Yangshilong’ from three words in the Sangtam dialect, ‘Yangkhu’ (Bag), ‘Shitseh’ (Journey), Amülung (Group). It’s motto is to Explore, Express, Enrich (E3) and its vision is to explore nature and advocate its preservation.
The newly founded team ‘Yangshilong’ also added that they will take up similar initiatives to bring about positive changes and promote tourism in the area.
