The picturesque district of Noklak experienced a harrowing ordeal on 16 July 2023, as torrential rains unleashed a series of devastating landslides, severely impacting vital lifeline roads that connect numerous villages within the region. The calamitous natural disaster has left communities cut off and facing significant challenges.

Among the worst-hit areas were the crucial lifeline roads connecting various villages under the Noklak district. The landslides wreaked havoc on three major routes, causing extensive damage and posing a significant threat to the transportation network.

The affected locations include the Panso EAC HQ to Tuensang road, which has been completely cut off by the ferocious force of the landslide. Similarly, the route from Panso EAC HQ to Noklak suffered blockage due to the overwhelming flash floods from upstream, exacerbating the situation further. Additionally, a critical road located 20 kilometers from Saddle to Noklak has also been severed due to the landslides’ impact.

Authorities swiftly mobilized to respond to the disaster, with the District Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) leading inspection efforts in the landslide-ravaged areas. The primary focus is on assessing the extent of the damage and formulating immediate strategies to facilitate clearance operations.

The landslide-induced road blockages have left communities stranded and isolated, raising concerns about access to essential services, medical aid, and supplies. The urgency to reinstate these lifeline roads cannot be understated, as the safety and well-being of the affected residents hang in the balance.

With rescue and recovery operations underway, local authorities are working tirelessly to address the challenges posed by the landslides. However, the nature of the disaster and its widespread impact demand coordinated efforts from government agencies, disaster response teams, and volunteer groups to restore normalcy to the affected region.

The Noklak district, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant communities, now grapples with the aftermath of this natural calamity.
