Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has directed the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) to enhance round-the-clock surveillance across the state and initiate all preventive and proactive measures to detect and deport any potential influx of illegal immigrants.

The directive came during a high-level meeting convened today at the Chief Minister’s residential complex in Kohima. The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary, DGP, and other senior government and police officials to review and strengthen vigilance mechanisms, particularly along the Assam-Nagaland border.

As part of the strategy, the Chief Minister also ordered the deployment of additional State Armed Police forces in border areas adjoining Assam.

The DGP informed the meeting that instructions had already been issued to the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur; Superintendents of Police (SPs); and Commandants to hold coordination meetings with district administrations. Officers-in-Charge (OCs) of police stations, especially in border areas, have been tasked with visiting all villages, conducting coordination meetings with Village Councils and Elders, and reporting any new entrants to the police and district administration. All SPs have been instructed to submit daily reports to the Additional Director General of Police (Law & Order), Nagaland.

The Chief Secretary emphasized the importance of maintaining a register of Inner Line Permit (ILP) holders in every village, which will be overseen by the respective Village Councils. Any suspected illegal immigrants or unidentified individuals must be immediately reported to the district administration and police.

According to a DIPR report, Rio issued firm instructions to the administration, police, and all enforcement agencies to take every necessary measure to prevent illegal immigration into Nagaland. He stressed the need for all agencies to remain on high alert and act decisively to uphold the security and integrity of the State’s borders.

Beyond strengthening border surveillance, the Chief Minister also directed the identification and eviction of any illegal immigrants who may already be residing in other parts of the state.

Rio appealed to all sections of society—especially community leaders and local citizens—to extend full cooperation to the enforcement authorities and remain vigilant. He underscored that collective responsibility and coordinated action between the public and the government is vital to safeguarding Nagaland’s interests and security.

On July 21, the State Government had directed all Deputy Commissioners to maintain heightened vigilance within their jurisdictions. Following these directives, the Deputy Commissioner of Niuland reported that over 200 vehicles carrying evicted illegal immigrants from Assam had attempted to enter the district. These attempts were successfully thwarted, and the individuals were deported by the District Administration, Police, and CRPF from various checkpoints.

The State Government is working in close coordination with all stakeholders to prevent any infiltration, and border patrolling has been significantly intensified.

Deputy Chief Minister for Home and Border Affairs, Y Patton, is personally monitoring the situation. On July 4, he visited vulnerable locations in the Ralan area under Wokha and Niuland districts to assess the situation following the eviction operations in Assam. During his visit, and in subsequent coordination meetings in the border areas, Patton expressed appreciation for the tireless efforts of the district administration, police personnel, GBs, student bodies, youth organizations, and volunteers in maintaining strict vigilance along the borders.
