The Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization (ENPO) and the Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) has jointly condemned the brutal and unprovoked assault that took place on August 8, 2024, in Pungro Town which was perpetrated by the town commander of the GPRN/NSCN-IM, alongside his accomplices.

“The targeted victims, Mr. Sangtikiu and Mr. Ati of the GPRN/NSCN (Kitovi) group, both members of the Yimkhiung community, endured a savage beaten with rifle butts and cane sticks, all while being held at gunpoint,” stated the joint press release.

The organisations viewed that disagreements or issues, irrespective of their nature, should be addressed or settled through dialogue and peaceful means rather than resorting to physical assault.

The manner in which the incident transpired, according to the ENSF and ENPO, reflects a total disregards of the principles of peace, justice and respect for human dignity and value. It further underscored a growing trend of aggressive and unjustified actions that threaten the peace and stability of the communities.

“Furthermore, it has come to our attention that Capt. Jangkhen, a figure associated with the GPRN/NSCN-IM, has been involved in intimidating students’ leaders, individuals, and business establishments. Such acts of intimidation not only create social disorder but also undermine the efforts toward establishing and maintaining peace and unity in the region,” stated the organisations.

The statement also reminded that the violent incident and the recent threats by Capt. Jangkhen are in clear violation of the ENPO resolution dated December 18, 2007.

“This resolution explicitly denounces bloodshed, threats, intimidation, and violence within the ENPO jurisdiction. The resolution reflects our yearning for collective commitment to resolving conflicts through peaceful and non-violent means, upholding the principles of justice and mutual respect, and fostering a harmonious and cohesive community. The actions of the perpetrators and those involved in intimidating others are in direct contradiction to these values,” stated the condemnation.

Such acts, according to the organizations, not only undermine the principles outlined in the ENPO resolution but also perpetuate a cycle of violence that erodes trust and stability within our communities. It Is imperative that such actions be unequivocally condemned and that those responsible be held accountable for their conduct, implored the ENPO and ENSF.

In light of these developments, the ENPO and ENSF has callled for immediate action to address and rectify what went wrong. It urged the concerned authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the case to ensure that justice is served. Further, it called for an end to threats and intimidation perpetrated by Capt. Jangkhen and his associates. “It is indispensible that measures be taken to prevent further acts of violence and to restore a sense of security and respect within our communities,” urged the organisations.
