A Tribute to Imtimeren Jamir
The tournament is held annually in memory of T. Imtimeren Jamir, an influential leader, visionary, and sports enthusiast from Longsa. Born on April 24, 1937, in Longsa, Imtimeren was deeply passionate about sports, music, and literature. His love for chess was profound, and he approached life with the strategic foresight of a chess player. Imtimeren’s life was defined by his service to the people, both in sports and politics.
A dedicated football player in his youth, Imtimeren went on to revive the Ao Milen, a vernacular paper, in 1966. He was also a prominent figure in the political scene, serving in various positions, including as a member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and Minister of Industries and Commerce.
His concern for his village’s welfare led him to propose and implement major initiatives, including gravity water supply from the Surohoto Range to Mokokchung and road construction that would promote eco-tourism. His efforts to improve the region’s infrastructure were a testament to his commitment to his people.
Imtimeren’s legacy lives on in Longsa, and his life is celebrated not just for his achievements but for the integrity and vision he demonstrated. His contributions to the region, both as a political leader and a beloved figure, remain an inspiration to many.
A chessboard-inspired tombstone in Longsa serves as a permanent reminder of his strategic vision and his dedication to the people of Nagaland.
