The Mokokchung Traffic Cell is set to launch the “Traffic Safety Awareness Week” from September 26th to 30th, with the overarching theme being “Unity for Road Safety”. The initiative has been organized with an aim to educate and sensitize the public about vital road safety measures.

SI Athangba, Incharge of Traffic Cell Mokokchung, has announced that the “Traffic Safety Awareness Week” will commence with a formal program at the ADC Planning Hall on September 26. Associations representing commercial drivers and two-wheeler riders will attend to receive guidance on traffic safety and road safety guidelines.

Starting from September 27, field awareness activities will be initiated. NCC cadets from Mayangnokcha Government Higher Secondar School will be educated on basic traffic rules and regulations after their regular classes. Additionally, they will collaborate with traffic personnel in strategic locations across Mokokchung Town to spread awareness.

The NCC cadets will be deployed in groups to gain both practical and theoretical knowledge, which they can then share with the public in various locations, highlighted Athangba.

Stressing on the importance of adhering to safety rules while driving, Athangba noted that the “Traffic Safery Awareness Week” is intended for all drivers in the district. Neglecting safety rules not only endangers the driver but also places passengers at risk, potentially leading to loss of life, said the Traffic personnel, urging drivers to exercise caution, as accidents, though unpredictable, can be prevented through awareness and responsible driving.

The Mokokchung Traffic Cell regularly conducts surprise Night MVCPs (Mobile Vehicle Checkpoints) using breath analyzers. Drunken driving is closely monitored in the town, with offenders required to attend Traffic Cell Mokokchung for 10 to 15 days to confirm their sobriety before resuming driving privileges.

In addition to helmet checks, Athangba informed, traffic personnel also inspect muffler cylinders. Unauthorized kits are promptly removed, and LED lights are confiscated on the spot. Vehicles of unlicensed individuals caught operating two-wheelers are seized until they can provide a valid driving license.

With this year’s accident rate been relatively high, where six accidents has been registered, resulting in three fatalities and several severe injuries, Athangba attributed many of these accidents to drunken driving, stressing the need for enhanced road safety measures and public awareness.
