S. Phangnon Konyak has urged the Khiamniungan women to grab the opportunity and play their roles in whatever capacity they can, saying ‘New India depends on women’.
The Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) was addressing the 5th General session cum 15th Executive meeting of the Khiamniungan Menyiu Hoikam (KMH) which was organised under the theme ‘Women in Progressive Society, at Wonthoi Village in Noklak district from 11-13 April 2023.

Phangnon, the guest of honour, reminded the women community that unity leads to achievements and that women should uplift each other. Acknowledging Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Nari Shakti’, which focuses on Women Empowerment and has enabled women in India, she urged the women to realise their own strength.
Phangnon also expressed her appreciation towards the village for its wisdom for allowing the women folks to play ‘log drum’ in the Morung. Later in a post on Twitter, she wrote, “… the collective wisdom of Wansoi village leaders who have understood that in today’s progressive society women also are equal members & allowed women of Wansoi to enter the Morung & play the logdrum for the first time!” She also added that Modi’s ‘Nari Shakti’ was showing results in the frontier district of Noklak.

Shamthai Phom, President, Eastern Nagaland Women Organisation (ENWO) stated that with the change of time in a progressive society, women are no longer confined only to the kitchen. She said that women are second to none and that the race is not to overtake men but to go parallel along with men, Phom added.
S. Tainiu, Additional Secretary, Government of Nagaland and Advisor KMH, pointed out three aspects where women are lacking – Economically, Socially and Politically. Emphasising on women playing a bigger role in the kitchen economy, Tainiu said that only if the family is uplifted, the society will be uplifted. She also stressed on the importance of girls’ education urging for radical decisions.
H. Chongtei, Women Secretary, Khiamniungan Baptist Churches Association (KBCA) enlightened the gathering with Biblical references to stand firm on moral values and to fight social evils.
During the occasion, women from each units displayed cultural items which is unique from each other, while they also exchanged among themselves the seeds of different kinds for cultivation available in their respective villages.
A workshop on legal rights and services was given by Advocate S. Pusam and self-care and hygiene by Dr. Jongkoi L. Khiamniungan.
