CHEDEMA:

While plantation drives have become a common feature of World Environment Day celebrations, many often end with saplings being planted for photographs and later forgotten. This year, however, Chedema village chose a different approach—one focused on long-term care, community participation, and environmental responsibility.
On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, the Chedema Students’ Union (CSU) joined hands with the students and staff of Government Primary School, Chedema, led by Principal Shri Keviheilie Medom, to undertake a unique plantation and conservation drive.
The programme was headed by Dr Keneilhoulie Medom, Managing Director of KOHIMAS Hospital, and Neisezolie Thevo, President of the Chedema Students’ Union. The initiative also witnessed the active participation of 30 NSS volunteers from Don Bosco College, Kohima, whose dedication and spirit of shramdaan significantly contributed to the success of the event. From digging pits and transplanting saplings to carrying water and maintaining existing plants, the volunteers demonstrated exemplary commitment to environmental service.
What set this plantation drive apart was its emphasis on sustainability rather than numbers. Before planting new saplings, participants first attended to trees and plants from previous plantation drives by weeding, watering, and mulching them, recognising that the survival of existing saplings is as important as planting new ones.
The drive also focused on enhancing the beauty of the village landscape. Hundreds of cosmos flower saplings were transplanted along the village road. Organisers expressed hope that within the next two months, the roadsides would be adorned with vibrant blooms of pink, white, and orange, creating a welcoming and colourful environment for residents and visitors alike.
The programme further reflected the spirit of partnership and community involvement. Personnel from 105 Battalion BSF, Chedema, actively participated in the drive and provided refreshments for all students, teachers, and volunteers. The BSF contingent was led by Shri Harendra Kumar (2IC), Officiating Commandant of 105 Battalion BSF, along with four officers, six subordinate officers, and twenty-one other ranks.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, organisers noted that the event was not merely a symbolic observance but a commitment by the children and youth of Chedema to nurture and care for the plants until they flourish.
The programme concluded with a message that true environmental stewardship extends beyond a single day of celebration. As participants pledged to return regularly to water and care for the saplings, the event stood as a reminder that protecting the environment requires consistent effort throughout the year.
