Makeup should enhance, not mask: Glam Artiste Asen Oungh Jamir

“Makeup is more than just products or techniques,  it’s a form of storytelling through transformation. It’s the quiet confidence someone feels when they look in the mirror, it’s intentional and emotional yet powerful,” says Asen Oungh Jamir, founder of the Glam Artisté, a  freelance bridal Make Up Artist (MUA) especially known for her expertise in bridal makeup, and hairdressing.

Jamir’s journey with makeup started in college when a friend gifted her an eyeshadow palette from Thailand, which led her to discover her love for creating beauty while doing makeup for friends backstage at events.

“What started as a passion slowly became a purpose, and in 2018, I chose to pursue makeup professionally. Seeing someone sit in my chair a little nervous and then walk away radiant and more confident is one feeling that never gets old for me,” expresses Jamir in an interaction with Nagaland Tribune.

On one’s style as a makeup artist, she believes in radiant, soft, and authentic looks, and stands by the firm belief that ‘makeup should enhance, not mask’.

Having faced bullying and low self-esteem growing up, Jamir noted that make-up, for her, became more than a skill. “It became healing. Seeing my clients gain confidence brings me immense fulfilment,” she attests.

When it comes to make-up, Jamir has one simple goal: to make the person sitting on her chair to feel seen, valued and beautiful just as they are. According to her, beauty exists in everyone, we just need the right perspective to see it. “I always try my best to listen carefully to my clients’ thoughts and requests. My focus is on making them feel like the best version of themselves. I like to build a warm and friendly relationship with my clients. For me, the session doesn’t begin with applying makeup, it starts from our very first communication,” says the MUA.

Establishing herself as an independent bridal makeup artist, developing skills while earning the trust of my clients have been meaningful milestones. “Working with brides and individuals who felt confident and seen through my work, along with consistent client appreciation and referrals, are honours I value deeply as I continue to grow in my career,” adds Jamir.

Begin today, urges Asen to young people who want to pursue their passion. While fears, doubts and opinions will always be there, she advises that growth happens when one takes the first step. We don’t need to be perfect, we learn along the way, she adds.
