Meet Lenshito Chang whose song ‘Sangmai Kaodak’ captivated Tuensang

Tuensang: Lenshito says his mother is his source of inspiration with whom he had grown up singing

21 years old Lenshito Chang is a talented singer and songwriter whose first single “Sangmai Kaodak” bowled over the people of Tuensang. The song, which is in Chang dialect, when translated to English means “Paradise World”. It also fetched him a nomination at the 15th Music Awards of Nagaland under the Category of Folk Fusion.

Speaking to Nagaland Tribune, Lenshito said that he was surprised by the love and support shown to him and his song by the people of Tuensang when it was released on 6th June 2023. Expressing his appreciation, he hoped that “Sangmai Kaodak” will give people a glimpse of how true love feels. The singer also said that he felt honoured by the nomination at the Music Awards of Nagaland.

Lenshito says his genre is popular music combined with elements of folk and traditional music which is “fresh and unique”. The young singer gives credit to his Eastern Nagaland roots that influences him to remain authentic and dedicated to his culture.

“My solo stage name is Lenshito Chang, but I also have duo stage name called Pencil and Compass with my friend Khumpong. Together with Khumpong, we envision to spread beautiful love songs giving people genuine reasons to start or restart loving”, Lenshito said.

The young singer, who also loves to write and go to the gym, shared that his musical journey began when he was in school. He said that his source of inspiration is his mother, who is also a musician, and with whom he had grown up singing. “Eventually, I developed an attachment with music and with the support of my family, I now want to pursue music as a profession,” Lenshito shared.

“In next 5 to 10 years, I see myself writing more songs getting onto bigger stages and being a source of inspiration to the young and ambitious youths”, the budding singer and songwriter stated.

Lenshito explained that the reason he wants to be a musician is because music allows him to explore his musical heritage and infuse it with his personal experiences, influences and creativity. Acknowledging the importance of support from family, he urged other singers to talk to theirs calmly and patiently until they get approval.

The talented singer promotes his music through social media platforms such as Instagram, YouTube and Spotify. He is also hopeful that news platforms such as Nagaland Tribune will encourage upcoming singers like himself by introducing them to a wider audience.

Conveying his gratitude to all his followers, Lenshito said, “It is you all who makes me the happiest and a determined individual to do better every day, so continue to shower your love and support on me and I will try my best to be one of your favourites”.

The 21-year-old is currently doing Bachelor Degree in English from St Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama, Kohima.

Lenshito and his friend Khumpong (Pencil and Compass) are at present working on a new love song titled “Watch you from Afar”.
